TMJ Disorder

TMJ Disorder

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull, and allows you to open and close your mouth. There are many components to this joint, which is why it is so common to have problems with it. Some reasons to have TMJ issues include stress, trauma, teeth clenching or grinding, and dental procedures. A healthy TMJ should open and close at the same time, without pain or discomfort. When individuals begin to have issues with this joint, the term TMJ disorder is used.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of TMJ Disorder are pain when opening or closing their mouth, clicking or popping when opening or closing their mouth, headaches, neck pain, pain in the jaw or temporal region, locking of the jaw and limited movement of the jaw.

The Chiropractors at Mountainview Chiropractic Center will assess the TMJ to determine the cause of the issue and provide the patient with the appropriate treatment protocol.

The practitioners treat patients with TMJ disorder by:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to restore normal joint motion
  • Myofascial release of the tissues that affect jaw motion
  • Educating the patient on sleeping positions and jaw health
  • Providing exercises to manage symptoms on their own

We have a history of treating patients with TMJ disorder very effectively!
